In Fall of 2019 I attended an architectural research program initiated by AURA Istanbul. The objective of the program was to offer researchers a free space and opportunity for research on issues related to architecture and urbanism, for 4 months. The theme of the Fall’19 program was “Techne & Tectonics”. The program was run / consulted by Boğaçhan Dündaralp and Hakan Tüzün Şengün – both renowned architects from Turkey.

In my research I investigated spaces of sex work as heterotopias in relation to tectonics. I explored how tectonics of the built environment influenced sex work both indoors and outdoors. I discovered both factual and speculative clues on the dialogue between the practice and the space. For my research I focused specifically on a street in Istanbul known for the local sex work.

At the end of the program each researcher was expected to present their findings in a pin-up. To best display my research I came up with architectural drawings and diagrams showing the aforementioned dialogue. Accompanied by a text-based research paper, photo albums and models, the drawings represented the dynamics in the street.

Below you can find the aforementioned drawings.

(!!!) I prefer to keep most of my research findings private. Because disclosing such information may threaten the safety of the local sex workers. Therefore, below I’m only sharing drawing with the text blurred. If you’d like to access further detail on my research you can contact me.
