Organized in collaboration with University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Center for Spatial Justice (MAD), the workshop titled “Urban Separation and Collaboration” (Kentsel Ayrışma ve İşbirliği) was a success in bringing together academics and activists to offer new perspectives and projects on contemporary urban issues. The week-long program included talks, urban walks, readings and seminars moderated by a number of professionals. In terms of the richness of its program, the workshop was one of a kind.

I was commissioned by MAD and UvA to design a graphic design kit that included both communication visuals and the additional material that would be used during the program.

In the overall design I went for a semi-abstract + symbolic narrative that would trigger the viewers and establish a foundation for further thinking. I determined that a crumpled piece of paper was the perfect symbol for trial and error. Furthermore, it also represents an incalculable chaos, in comparison to an orthogonally folded piece of paper.

On top of the paper I placed a grid representing the so-called ideal urban design. However, I made it so that the grid is distorted in parts where it is overlaid on top of the paper. In those parts I made the lines of the grid follow the creases of the paper. That was meant as an intentional maneuver hinting at how cities are organic + chaotic and not so orderly in a grid-like fashion, thus, implying that the workshop will explore through trial-error, the real and chaotic face of urban environment, unfolding its creases one by one.

As part of the commission I designed several things including an easy access program, a certificate of attendance and some other printed material.
