Center for Spatial Justice’s (MAD), an NGO from Istanbul, Turkey, believes that all social conflicts and issues are rooted in “space”. In light of such understanding, MAD works on issues regarding both ecology and urbanism. Some of MAD’s works are seminars and panels. They often organize both virtual and in-person seminars regarding issues on which they’d like to raise awareness.

I was commissioned by MAD and BAYETAV (collaborator partner) to create images for a virtual seminar on mining and the ecological damage caused by mining. The name of the seminar was “Is it possible to restore the damage caused by mining?” – a speculative name, a question designed to trigger the attendees. I thought the graphics for such seminar should share the same vibe. Thus, I went for a design that had semiological layers.

I patched the satellite image of a mining field on an abstract green background. I patched the foreground image on the green background with simple tapes, speculating on how these two don’t come together.

I kept the background as abstract and simple as I could so that I could create a contrast against the foreground’s chaotic look. Furthermore, I highlighted the name of the seminar, bringing it even further on top for it was not only a simple name, but instead a big question meant to trigger those who read it.

Overall I really like the dynamism and balance in the design. I also really like the color scheme as it helps the post stand out in the newsfeed on all platforms. In that sense, this one is special to me, compared to my other social media designs.
