Geothermal Energy Power Plants (GEPP (or JES in Turkish)) are widely used as a source of energy in Aegean region of Turkey. GEPP’s are known for their damage on the surrounding ecosystem and human life. The damages they cause can show themselves in many forms – one of which is “slow violence”.

MAD and BAYETAV, both NGO’s working on ecology and urbanism, are two of the most prominent institutions fighting against the ecological damages caused by GEPP’s. They have long been pursuing a fight and efforts in raising awareness against GEPP’s. One of their most recent works was a panel in Aydın where they met with people who were directly affected by the GEPP’s. I was tasked by MAD and BAYETAV with creating graphics for this panel.

I divide my design strategy in three parts:

1) I used a landscape photo with a distortion effect to better emphasize the situation in Aydın. Simply put, my plan was to create a distorted image to match the distorted reality.

2) I wanted to make sure that natural scenery was in contrast to the GEPP’s pipes. Therefore, I drew a very vectoral pipe on top of the image emphasizing how they do not relate.

3) For the overall narrative of the design, in the composition I wanted to make the GEPP pipes look as if they were the center of gravity pulling or pushing everything else, where as the only orthogonal or straight line is the pipe itself, thus implying a disharmony.

4) I intentionally made sure the pipes looked a bit like the structure of a tree. In doing so, I intended to make the viewer question whether or not that is a tree of a pipe sticking out of the ground. That was a decision made to strengthen the narrative.
