Center for Spatial Justice (MAD), an NGO from Istanbul, focuses on urbanism and ecology. Amongst MAD’s works are publications, panels, exhibitions and – most significant of all – workshops. MAD regularly organizes workshops on urbanism and ecology that aim to raise awareness and to offer creative solutions to contemporary issues.
Unlike most of MAD’s workshops that are tailored for academics and activists, this workshop was designed for kids. The purpose of the workshop was to raise awareness amongst kids (between 4 to 8 years old) about urban farming. We all know that the future will hold its own challenges regarding urban farming, food and water resources. In that sense, the workshop could be seen as an investment in our future.
I was tasked with creating images that would appeal both to kids and their caregivers / parents. I tried my best finding a fine line between the two. The images should look trustworthy and serious enough to the caregivers, but also fun and appealing to the kids as well.
I started with a highly vectoral background that represented a landscape composed of both an urban scenery and pastoral foreground reminiscent of farming. On the top layer I added some child-like sketches, through which I meant to establish a level of familiarity to the kids.
