I was commissioned by Center for Spatial Justice (MAD) and Marmara Municipalities Union (MBB) in November 2024 to create designs for their upcoming workshop called the “Urban Well-being Workshops”. The workshop was intended to appeal to academics and representatives of local municipalities.

The idea of “well-being” by its nature, is very abstract and – for most – very difficult to grasp. It is very amorphous and intangible. However, it is one of the key concepts which an urbanist should adopt in their intellectual discourse, for a better understanding of today’s cities.

Keeping such a challenge in mind, in the designs I incorporated the use of photography in order to convey the viewer a realistic image of what well-being meant or looked like. We all can come up with various images that represent well-being in cities. However, almost all Istanbulites share a common image – that of the sea. Sea – for most Istanbulites – is what grounds us, helps us navigate soundly within the city. Furthermore, with the rising pollution in water, swimming in Bosphorus is a long-forgotten dream we all share. Therefore I started with the image of a random man standing on a pier looking at the see, almost longing to jump in the water.

For the overlaying layout, I went for a fragmented look – almost like a puzzle waiting to be rearranged. I believe in workshops people do not invent new things – instead they rearrange thoughts and facts to come up with creative solutions. And every workshop in essence is a challenge or a puzzle that waits to be solved / fixed. Therefore, I broke the image into pieces, spreading them all around the layout giving it the impression of a puzzle and that it is now only up to the attendees to rearrange the pieces in place.
