As one of the leading heritage NGOs in Turkey, ÇEKÜL (the Foundation for the Protection and Promotion of the Environment and Cultural Heritage) strives to foster and build a nation-wide awareness and network for the preservation of the urban and rural, built and natural environment.
Each year ÇEKÜL publishes a report on their yearly activities. Having only recently redesigned their corporate identity, they commissioned me to design two separate yet related things. First, they wanted me to prepare the 2024 Activities Report aligned with their already in-use corporate identity, and second they wanted it to work as a template for all future publications.
ÇEKÜL’s recently designed corporate identity was at first quite challenging. It had a very feel to it. It was comprised of large plain blocks, all in primary colors and mostly incorporated in the design in the form of typography. That presented a level of challenge for it was difficult to stretch and variate. My first task was to analyze and learn from the corporate identity, noting a few lessons that could be helpful in the book design.
Throughout the book design, in alignment with the corporate identity, I stuck with large and plain blocks of primary colors with subtle twists. Such subtle twists included readjusting the placement of colors, diagrams, icons, an emphasis on black and white as contrasting accents.
The book was not intended to be printed in large numbers. They expected that most readers would read the book via laptop screens. Thus, I tried my best in keeping a book layout that could also be viewed as a presentation on a computer screen.
